Answers to common Questions

Q: What do you shoot?

A: We shoot 22cal. single-shot, bolt-action, smallbore rifles with mounted peep-sights. The ammo we use is standard velocity, 22 long rifle, lead round nose; (no hollow-points).

Q: What kind of targets do you shoot?

A: We shoot paper targets placed 50 feet from the firing line. Each card has twelve bulls (2 for practice and 10 for score), and each shooter shoots 3 cards.

Q: Is there a time limit?

A: Yes. All shooters will have 3 minutes to dry-fire and immediately afterward, have 45 minutes to shoot their 3 cards.

Q: Do I need to buy a rifle for my child?

A: You do NOT need to bring your own rifle. The club provides these for all the members. However, some of our veteran shooters do use their own rifles. We do encourage all members to at least shoot for a few weeks before they decide to invest in any equipment for themselves.

Q: What do we need to bring to practice/competitions?

A: Shooters need to bring only four things to practice: 1) ammo, 2) ear protection, 3) eye protection, 4) and a parent/guardian at all times. The club provides all rifles, targets, and other equipment.

Q: Can I drop my child off at practice and pick them up when it's over?

A: No. All shooters must have a parent/guardian (18yrs+) with them on the shooting range at all times. Guardians cannot leave the range (stay in the viewing area, their vehicles, etc.) at any time during the course of fire.

Q: Me / my child has little to no experience with firearms. Will this be a problem?

A: Absolutely not! We (range officers, coaches, and other parents) are available to help every step of the way! We treat every new shooter like they've never handled any firearms before, whether they have or not.

Q: What will my child learn as a shooter in this club?

A: All shooters will learn basic fundamentals in how to safely and proficiently handle firearms. Some of the things they will learn are: what is a safe direction, trigger control, proper breathing, time management, and when and where it's safe to discharge a firearm.

Q: We attended one of the safety trainings but missed the second. Can we still shoot in January?

A: Unfortunately, no. Every shooter must have two safety trainings in order to begin shooting in January. Veteran shooters (shooters that have been with us for a year or more) only need to attend one training in the fall.

Q: What are the age divisions?

A: There are four age divisions in our district and the shoot different positions accordingly. Juniors: 3-5th grade, shoot 3 prone cards. Junior-Intermediates: 6-7th grade, shoot 2 prone cards and 1 kneeling card. Intermediates: 8-9th grade, shoot 1 prone, 1 kneeling, and 1 standing card. Seniors: 10-12th grade, shoot 1 prone, 1 kneeling, and 1 standing card - and two of each at the district and state matches.

Q: How far can shooters advance in competition?

A: All shooters can participate in the District Match held at the end of the shooting season in April. Shooters in the senior division that place in the top 3 individual or team can advance to State. The Texas State Match is in June every year and generally held at the rifle range in Victoria, Tx. Shooters that are 14-18yrs of age can also shoot at 4-H Shooting Sports Nationals held every year in Nebraska. After graduation, some go to Texas Christian University (TCU), or other universities where they can continue to compete and possibly even try for the Olympics!
